TRANSPORT For Wales has revealed more details about their rollout of new trains on county train lines which will include an increase in carriages on services.

The news come as Vale MS Jane Hutt has called for 30 minute train services in the Vale.

TfW recently revealed they are currently “deferring commitments” to provide two trains per hour all day between Bridgend, Llantwit, Rhoose and Barry, something Vale MP Alun Cairns described as a ”slap in the face” for Vale passengers.

Ms Hutt met TFW chief executive James Price at Barry Station on April 25 to discuss rail passenger needs and called for more frequent services at peak times in western Vale as well as the provision of new trains with more carriages for all Cardiff to Barry, Llantwit Major/Bridgend services.

While there is no definitive line yet from TfW on western Vale services, Wales national rail service provider has revealed exciting plans about an upgrade in carriages on county lines.

From this summer, TfW will be introducing their brand-new fleet onto the Vale of Glamorgan line which will include increased capacity from two carriages to four and a “more comfortable journey experience”.

From Summer this year the new Class 231 will be running on nearly all services to Barry Island, increasing nearly all Barry Island services from two carriages to four carriages.

Legacy 2 car Class 150 units will remain on the VoG service to Bridgend and a very small number of Barry Island services.

From 2026 new Class 756 will replace Class 231 on Barry Island services.

Also from 2026 the legacy Class 150 units will be removed from the Vale of Glamorgan and replaced by the Class 231 units.

On her meeting with Mr Price at Barry train station, Ms Hutt said: “I was assured by the chief executive of TfW that Vale passengers would benefit from the new trains we see in our sidings in Barry, with more coaches provided at peak times.

“The TFW chief executive also agreed to look at the provision of more frequent services at peak times for the western Vale.

“I will be calling for a 30-minute service from Cardiff to Rhoose and Llantwit Major at peak times for Vale passengers morning and evening and I will be meeting with the Cabinet Secretary for Transport Minister, Ken Skates, to follow this up.

“More services at peak times would be a breakthrough for the western Vale, benefiting commuters, taking cars off the road, improving the environment and our economy. It would be a ‘win win’ for the Vale of Glamorgan transport services and my constituents.”
