TWO outstanding penalty saves by goalkeeper Sharratt enabled Sully Sports to edge this South Wales Senior Soccer League clash on Saturday.
A gusty wind dominated the First Division encounter and Sully, playing with the conditions in the first half, had most of the play but struggled with a mixture of too long a pass and a failure to make the most of set pieces. In a drab first period, Sports rarely produced their normally slick football, but Brecon, to be fair, produced a sterling defensive performance and had an inspired goalkeeper.
After some stern half-time words from the management , Sully continued to do most of the attacking and achieved a deserved breakthrough on the hour when Conner McInery went straight down the middle, sidestepped a tackle and beat the 'keeper.
With Brecon forced to be more adventurous, Sully were creaking and conceded two penalties, both of which produced the outstanding saves from Sharratt to earn him the man of the match accolade in the eyes of the large crowd.
Sharratt's heroics certainly lifted Sully and, with Long and Lawlor working everywhere, they were back in command and able to rest the latter and Ed Jones after some over the top tackles. They were replaced by Hemmens and Rees, while the dependable, no nonsense Andrew Townsend reverted to centre back.
Sports created a few more chances and faced eight minutes of injury time to gain the narrow victory.
This Saturday Sports entertain Pontlottyn at Swanbridge; players to report to the club at 12.15pm.
Sully's Vale League side play FC Pumas at Swanbridge, needing one point to secure the First Division title for the first time.
Trailing 3-0 at half-time, Sully Ladies responded to some inspiring half-time words by coach Mark Brown and Sarah George to battle back for a 3-3 draw. Sully's goals came from Emma Reynolds, Jess Cogbill and Stevie Cook.
The team played under floodlights at Pontypridd on Tuesday night and welcome the same opponents to Sully on April 27; kick-off 2pm.
