MORE than 60 intrepid members braved winter temperatures to support the the opening of the Penarth Bowling Club's outdoor green for the 2014 summer season.
Ably assisted by club captain Phil Davies and lady captain Kath Jenkins, president Nick Chandler bowled the first wood to declare the green officially open.
A spoons competition ensued over a total of 20 ends and, with fingers becoming increasingly numbed by the bitterly cold conditions, it was time to retire to the warmth and comfort of the bar to debate the pros and cons of the forthcoming season.
The competition resulted in a resounding victory for a rink skipped by Bob Lewis.
A scrumptious tea provided by the ladies of the club concluded a most satisfactory day, with members going home feeling well pleased with the events of an enjoyable day.
