THE Penarth Bowling Club's PG2 side took the honours on Saturday when they ventured, somewhat wearily, to face a St Fagans side that only three weeks earlier had pounded them at the Rectory Road green.

Not at all at fazed by this hurtful memory, captain Lawrence led his men to a revenge triumph by five shots and a 10-point haul.

Bob Wilmott, Roger Gidman, Mike England and Dave Ingram raced to a 10-shot lead after 11ends and were never troubled in a 24-13 success. Not to be outdone, Ron Maggs, despite being 10 shots adrift after four ends, rallied his troops (Guy Thomas, Phil Davidge and Peter Needham) to lead 19-10 after 16 ends and run out 21-15 winners.

A win was also on the cards for the Bob Hill rink as they entered the final quarter leading by five shots. However, some loose bowling over the last five ends saw them drop 11 shots and slip to a 24-19 reverse.

Despite battling throughout, Colin Grant's four were never in control of their game and slipped to a 27-20 defeat.

Nevertheless, overall, this was a most satisfying result and a good points haul.

A side of mainly first team players visited Millwood in Barry for a friendly which the home team won fairly convincingly 93-76. The only Penarth rink stemming the tide was Bob Lewis, Phil Davies, Nick Thomas and Mike Conway, who controlled their game to run out easy 36-8 winners. The least said about the other three rinks the better, sufficient to report that they all lost. Thankfully, it was only a friendly.

This Saturday brings the start of the PG1 campaign with an away game at Cardiff Athletic. Standards will need to improve to ensure a winning start.
