MILLWOOD Bowling Club held their annual Charity Day on Sunday, August 19, when various events and competitors were held both inside the clubhouse and out on the green.
All the monies raised from these events were to be added to those already raised previously throughout the season and divided equally between the two separate charities chosen by the Ladies and Mens Captains.
The Ladies Captain Norma Goodrich chose the local residential EMI unit Bryneithin at Dinas Powys as her nominated charity while the Mens Captain nominated Ty Hafan Childrens Hospice.
The weather turned out to be glorious on the day, in complete contrast to the deluge of rain which caused the clubs games to be postponed the previous day.
Out on the green the proceedings started with target bowls and then the Spider competition where bowlers are just as likely to lose their single bowls as to get near the jack.
On this occasion, after the jack had bounced around the green when struck, it ended up near Margaret Knights wood and she was declared the winner of the Spider event.
The annual charity match between Millwood Ladies and the clubs men was played for the impressive Astoria Shield, and the men won by a slender margin.
Everyone moved inside for a massive raffle supervised by Jean Podmore, and a guess the weight of the cake competition.
The cake was baked and donated by Margaret Emeny and won by new member John Crout.
Marlene Blake ran her usual bric a brac stall and raised a substantial amount, while a cake baked by Mrs Hindmarsh was auctioned for a large sum.
The coffers were swollen by the proceeds from the Monday Spoons evenings, and grateful thanks for their efforts went to Bob Wyatt and David Knight.
There was also a welcome contribution from Brian Payne, President of South Vale and when all the proceeds were totted up, a delighted Millwood President Stan Rogers announced that £900 had been raised to be shared equally by the two charities.
Ty Hafan Administrator Mrs Audrey Court was presented with the cheque and thanked Millwood for their wonderful efforts.
Mrs Rosemary Oldfield, Treasurer of Bryneithin League of Friends, and Mrs Jan Thomas, Officer in Charge of Bryneithin Residential Unit, Dinas Powys, jointly accepted their cheque for £450 on behalf of the Alzheimers Society.
Mrs Thomas was able to tell the members something of the work that goes on at Bryneithin which offers permanent and respite care for Alzheimers sufferers.
