Road debate rumbles on

PENARTH Esplanade's one-way traffic scheme should stay in place for the next 12 months, Penarth Town councillors have urged.

The controversial experiment was put in place in April, and this week, after six months, members of the council's Policy and Finance Committee reviewed the situation.

Town clerk Edward Vick said: "In terms of the operation there have not been any direct representations to the town council over the scheme, which has been in operation during the summer months.

"Anecdotal comment has been generally favourable but members will probably be aware of contrary views expressed in the local press."

Cllr Harold Rees, Labour, said: "We should return our original suggestion to look at it after 18 months so we can see how it has affected two summer seasons.

"It gives more time for people to come up with comments about the scheme."

But Conservative Cllr Ruby Osborne said: "One complaint I got was about the reversing of cars into bays in front of the Seacot Hotel and the Meditteraneo Restaurant with fumes going into them. I think it might be something we should take on board."

Mr Vick told members that Vale Council officers were aware of these issues and would be considering them as part of any decisions made.

Cllr David Clapham, Labour, said: "In principle most people think it's a good idea, but there are small problems that have arisen. The best way forward is cautiously."

Members will recommend to the Vale Council that the scheme stays in place for another 12 months.
