Plaid presses for more spending

MORE money must be ploughed into the upkeep of Dinas Powys' roads, Plaid Cymru has urged.

Plaid councillors in the village say years of failure to properly look after the highways, pavements and street lights in both Dinas Powys and the Vale must be brought to an end.

Cllr Chris Williams raised the matter at a meeting of the Vale Council this week.

He said: "Plaid is supporting the many requests for an adequate budget for the Vale roads."

Following 'considerable pressure', Cllr Williams says Plaid's members have managed to have Millbrook Road, Stacey Road, Greenfield Avenue and Cardigan Close resurfaced. However, there is much more to do, he says.

He added: "After years of decline in the highways maintenance budget, this year saw an additional million pounds provided to repair crumbling roads and replace defective street lights.

"Unfortunately this figure, given the neglect in the past, is only able to tackle a small number of roads that are desperately in need of remedial action."

Cllr Williams has now asked the leader of the council, Cllr Jeffrey James, if it is intended to increase next year's highway budget by at least a million pounds.

Cllr Williams said: "Unfortunately it all seems to depend on the level of grant the Vale receives from the government. This year we suffered a cut of £2,300,000... think what could have been done with this amount of cash."
