1000s will attend light switch on

THOUSANDS of Penarth residents both young and old are expected to attend the switching on of the town centre's Christmas lights at the end of this month.

The event, on Friday, November 30, will see not only coloured bulbs lighting up along Windsor Road, but also on the Christmas tree, set to go up on the town centre roundabout.

Organisers are hoping to have better luck this year, after last year's tree was blown down in high winds only to be replaced a short time before December 25.

Events start at 6.30pm with carol singing and brass accompaniment, following which, at 6.50pm, town mayor Cllr Carole Clifford will give a speech.

At 7pm Cllr Clifford will switch on the lights, and then at 7.15pm, the Jane Clarke School of Dance will put on a dance display.

At 7.30pm, children's eyes will light up as Father Christmas arrives in Penarth, bringing the spirit of yuletide right into the town.

There will be lots of other things to do on the night, with plenty of exciting stalls, roundabouts and even warm horse chestnuts provided by local scouts.

Road closures will be in place along parts of Glebe Street and Windsor Road, as in previous years.

A spokesman for organisers Penarth Town Council said: "We are expecting this to be a big event. It should be really good for everyone.

"We are hoping we won't have the same problems with the Christmas tree as last year, and expect that there could be in the region of two thousand people attending."
