Sully Sports RFC Juniors entertain St Mellons

SULLY Sports RFC, formerly Barry Plastics RFC, has been thrilled by the success of its newly formed junior section.

Despite being founded less than two months ago the section is thriving. Hard work from the club's committee, in particular chairman Ray Gallivan, has borne fruit.

The club hoped to attract a few local youngsters and, if it was lucky, have enough members to play some kind of fixture before Christmas. Instead the club has an Under 8's team, Under 9's and Under 10's squad. Some of these can almost field two teams, and the club is certain to debut more teams in the following months.

Training takes place each Sunday morning at Sully Sports & Social Club on South Road, Sully meeting at 10.20am. Players up to the age of 15 are welcome, of any ability and experience. The club has several female players as girls can play mixed rugby up to the age of 13.

In a recent visit to Sully, St Mellons dominated the frantic early exchanges, with their extra months of practice showing, before the Sully Under 10's found their composure and began to control the game. Tackling furiously and running with great speed and agility Sully eventually took a lead that they would never surrender. A 5-2 victory was very satisfying for the players who had worked so hard in the past five to six weeks in training.

Also the feeling of club community was great. All teams, coaches and parents stayed to watch all the games and give their vocal support. It was pleasing to see the gracious way victory and defeat was taken and team shook hands and cheered each other at close of play.
