PENARTH centre could be the site for a £1million-plus development of maisonettes and apartments.
Andton Properties has instructed Cardiff Bay-based NOEL Architects to put in an application for the "innovative" scheme.
The proposals combine the provision of three two-bedroom maisonettes and three one-bedroom flats with a four-bedroom penthouse and two-bedroom apartment in a rear mews-type development.
A private amenity area for the use of all residents would be created in a central courtyard. The plans would replace the current dilapidated building on Church Road with "a high quality, contemporary scheme incorporating modern and traditional building materials, creating an exciting, vibrant series of homes." Simon Baston, a director of Andton Properties, said: "We have worked closely with the local planning authority to ensure our proposals do not conflict with their overall requirements.
'We have paid close attention to the scale of the development and rooflines, as well as amenity space and off road car parking while retaining the existing trees, which will be improved.
"There is an unusual mix of architectural styles on Church Road and our proposals will provide a dynamic, modern statement fit for the 21st century."
The project architect is Spaniard Marga Munar, who designed the Church Road scheme.
"I have tried to be respectful to the existing mix of architectural style prevalent in the immediate area while introducing a greater use of maisonettes and apartments which incorporate a more private communal amenity area which will provide residents with their own green area away from the main road," said Miss Munar.
Andton Properties has developed a strong reputation for providing high quality, innovative residential schemes in South Wales with a diverse selection of successful developments completed in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan, including Penarth and Barry.
Vale of Glamorgan planners were due to consider the proposals as we went to press.
