PENARTH's streets are now cleaner and safer thanks a unique project spearheaded by the local authority.
The Streetcare initiative launched by the Vale of Glamorgan Council earlier this year is creating a better environment for residents throughout the town.
Working in partnership with the South Wales Police and the community, through organisations such as Neighbourhood Watch, the council has indicated its commitment to the scheme by providing additional funding of £175,000 during the current year.
Using high pressure washers, five dedicated teams have been engaged in improving cleanliness and removing graffiti and chewing gum where necessary, while the council has also committed a further £70,000 to various works, including crossings for the disabled and improvements in street furniture and signage.
The council's cabinet member for visible services, Cllr Gerald Fletcher, said: "Streetcare is about tidy pleasant streets and attractive open spaces which are very important to local people.
"All of our partners recognise that how we feel about the community we live in, as well as our concerns for safety and well being, are directly related to the quality of our environment.
"Streetcare is about making clear environmental improvements by directing resources towards issues that make a difference such as tackling graffiti, flyposting and littering."
Research has shown that creating a clean and tidy environment where people feel secure leads to an increase in civic pride, and Cllr Fletcher added: "If we increase the pride people feel for the area they live in, they are less likely to commit acts of vandalism."
