PENARTH youngsters helped to launch a new recycling scheme on Thursday which could see them winning fantastic cash prizes for their schools.
Year eight pupils James King, Luke Davies, John Butterworth and Andrew Warner from St Cyres School took part in the launch of the Directory Recycling Scheme, sponsored by Yellow Pages.
Some 20 schools in the Vale of Glamorgan are participating in the scheme, which will recycle old Yellow Pages from schools, homes and businesses in the area.
The school which collects the most directories will win a £500 prize, as will the individual pupil who collects the most directories.
And for those people who do not have children in a school Cardiff Waste Forum, which is organising the scheme, is inviting companies which use more than 30 Yellow Pages books to get involved by taking part.
Those not involved in a company or school scheme can take part by depositing their directory in one of four skips at Tesco in Penarth, Barry, and Culverhouse Cross, or at the Fox and Hounds in Llantwit Major.
Ellen Perryman, campaign manager for Cardiff Waste Forum, said: "There's no excuse for people not to partic-ipate. Children can get involved and win a lot of money for their school."
Vale AM Jane Hutt said: "I'm pleased the scheme is not just aimed at house-holders but also at workplaces and schools.
"It is particularly important that our children understand why recycling like this is so important. I wish the scheme every success."
The campaign is a substantial extension of last year's successful Cardiff Yellow Pages Recycling Scheme in which 25 schools participated and 2.3 tonnes of directories were collected.
