THE MEMBERS of Windsor Lawn Tennis Club were saddened to hear of the sudden death of John Morton on Friday, December 7.
John, 68, lived in Dinas Road and had been a member of the club for over 36 years. During this time John had held office as chairman, club captain and secretary and was always at the forefront in his support of all tennis, social and fund-raising activities.
John always played his tennis with style and passion. As an opposing player you would always find it difficult to deal with his serve. His quick service action would invariably connect racquet to ball and guide it at a most acute angle for a service ace. John, with a twinkle in his eye and a big smile would then tell you, "You never had a chance of getting that one." Other good strokes would be followed by, "That was a winner the moment it left my racquet," or simply, "Too good boys!"
When you knew John, you also knew that this commentary wasn't arrogance - it was more a celebration of his enjoyment and love of the game. It was also meant to be motivational because John liked nothing better than a good, competitive match.
John collapsed on court doing one of the things he loved best, and the club would like to pay tribute to a man who was held in high regard by everyone who knew him, a man of style and substance - a good friend - he will be missed by all.
The members of Windsor Lawn Tennis Club extend their deepest sympathies to Sarah and the family at this very sad time.
