PENARTHIANS are being asked to check their food cupboards following a potential food scare.
Two major food retailers with stores serving the Vale of Glamorgan area have withdrawn and recalled certain Dutch manufactured hot dog products.
The action by Asda and Lidl supermarkets had been taken because the tinned hot dogs carry a small risk of food poisoning and some of the cans are at risk of exploding when opened.
The affected hot dog products are: Asda - Smart Price (400g cans with a best before date of September 2003) and Lidl - Dulano and Chira (400g cans with a best before date of September 2004).
A spokesman for the Vale of Glamorgan Council's food safety division said: "Given the nature of the problem, and the fact that this type of product is likely to remain for long periods in homes between purchase and consumption, we feel that, although the companies are displaying in store notices and have placed press adverts, further publicity may assist in preventing consumers eating affected products.
"An examination of suspect cans has revealed bacterial growth and, although this could pose a small risk of food poisoning, there are no known complaints alleging illness.
"Other complaints include cans exploding on opening and fizzing and foul smelling contents."
Anyone who has purchased any of the above products - only the above date codes are affected - should return to their nearest store for a full refund.
