Hockey ladies book quarter-final spot

AFTER their 15 goals without reply in the first round, Penarth Ladies returned from their mid-season break resuming where they left off with another resounding cup victory.

Penarth totally outplayed Buckley on Sunday, with a scintillating performance. The visitors were considered to be the strongest opposition in North Wales at the moment but, this title was treated with scant regard by the Seasiders who rattled up a 13-1 victory, taking them to a quarter-final place against Haverfordwest.

Heulwen Evans gave Penarth the lead after ten minutes and just four minutes later added a second goal.

Buckley briefly threatened when they pulled a goal back shortly after. Zoe Barnett coming onto the field scored what has to be one of the fastest hat-tricks ever, scoring her three goals inside four minutes.

Not to be outshone, Heulwen Evans completed her hat-trick in excellent fashion on the stroke of half-time.

In the second period the Seasiders went up another gear.

Bridie Davies made it 7-1 with an excellent solo effort and with the Buckley defence out-paced and at full stretch, the sound of the ball on back board came at regular intervals.

Kate Morgan contributed with the third hat-trick of the game and captain Kirsten Tedder bagged two for herself, with Carys Hopkins making up the final tally.

Penarth resume their National League programme next Sunday with a 12.30pm start against UWIC at Cyncoed.

If they can maintain their present form they must have the best chance in many seasons, of taking the championship, not to mention the cup.
