Ex-pupil's film track triumph

A FORMER Penarth pupil has had a taste of major movie success after winning a prestigious award for co-writing a soundtrack.

Steve Parr, who attended Penarth County Grammar School, has picked up an FIPA (Festival International de Programmes Audiovisuels) award for 'best original soundtrack for a feature film' for his music for '100 Days', a film about the Rwandan genocide of 1994.

Mr Parr, now living in London, co-wrote the soundtrack with Sharon Rose. Although more generally known as the proprietors of Hear No Evil, Parr and Rose have been writing music together for nearly ten years with many documentaries, theatre projects and recordings to their credit.

Mr Parr is vice chairman of the Music Producers Guild, while Sharon Rose is director of Women in Film and Television International.

Mr Parr said: "News cameraman Nick Hughes wrote and directed '100 Days' after being caught up in the traumatic events where over a million Tutsi were hacked to death by the ruling Hutu minority within the space of 100 days.

"The intense portrayals in the drama were in no small part due to the fact that nearly all the roles were played by survivors of the massacre."

The film is currently making the round of international festivals prior to its general release.
