Opera tale told

A PENARTH opera singer has published a novel based on his own experiences.

Bass singer David Lloyd, who lives at Windsor Terrace, has written Hope Fulfilled which is a fictional story focusing on the world of opera.

He will be signing copies of the book at the Windsor Bookshop on Saturday, February 23, from 1pm.

Mr Lloyd, who has lived in Penarth for 20 years, has enjoyed much success around the world, and has drawn on this experience for his book. Acclaimed by many, Mr Lloyd knows what he is talking about, as he's described as having one of the few, very rare bass voices.

International tenor George Shirley said to him: "You have been blessed with a voice of impressive nobility."

Mr Lloyd said: "I turned my creative thoughts to writing after my increasing mobility problems restricted my activities and interests.

"I've used my experience of singing all over the world. The book is about a musical family, the Brandons."

The book focuses on tenor Richard Brandon who is disappointed in his daughter's refusal to undertake an operatic career. He wonders if his hopes will be fulfilled by his grandson.

Publishers Blackie and Co said: "The trials and tribulations of establishing a successful professional career are contrasted with the struggles facing many amateur singers and music groups to survive. "Hope Fulfilled includes ideas and suggestions to help local choirs, operatic societies, etc. to be successful, thus maintaining their contribution to our cultural heritage."

Although many of David's singing commitments are outside Penarth, he often appears as a guest artist at local fund-raising and charity concerts. Later this year he hopes to record a CD with his accompanist Jean Randall, containing a variety of songs and arias demonstrating the wide range of his voice.

n Copies of the book are available from Blackie and Co, 107-111 Fleet Street, London, EC4A 2AB, or phone 0207 936 9021.
