BOOKWORMS at Ysgol Pen-y-Garth are brushing up on their skills ready for this year's World Book Day.
The school is one of a number in the Vale involved in the scheme which takes place next Thursday, March 14.
Many will be celebrating by asking pupils to dress up as their favourite book characters as part of a host of activities based on books and reading.
Ysgol Pen-y-Garth annually supports the campaign and among this year's events is a readathon, with parents visiting the school to assist pupils in reading as many books as possible to raise money for children with cancer.
Each class will help write one story and the finished item will be read out at the end of the day. They will also enter a contest to design a book token.
Ruth Pilcher, 10, of Year 5, said: "I loved reading Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings and am really looking forward to World Book Day."
Her friend Hannah Gunning, 10, of year 6, added: "I love books. The thing I like most about World Book Day is the fact that it's a day just doing reading. That's great."
Schools and libraries are working together to plan special events to celebrate the day and to coincide with National Science Week, March 15-23.
Groups from Cosmeston Lakes Country Park, the Seawatch maritime interpretation centre and the Glamorgan Heritage Coast Centre, Southerndown, will talk to youngsters at Penarth, St Athan and Wenvoe libraries.
Cllr Tony Hampton, the Vale council's cabinet member for lifelong learning, said: "World Book Day is an international celebration to help children to explore the pleasures of books and reading."
