Cup magic for schools

BUDDING rugby stars at two Penarth schools were left inspired this week when the Six Nations Cup came to visit.

John Huw Williams, director of Capital Rugby, brought the impressive cup to Ysgol Pen-y-Garth and Evenlode Primary last Thursday ahead of Wales' clash with Italy on Saturday.

At Ysgol Pen-y-Garth there were gasps of excitement as Mr Williams asked "who likes rugby?"

Lucky youngsters Huw Morgan and Ryan Donovan, both aged ten, who have previously played rugby for the Vale, were allowed a closer look.

Huw said: "I'm going to see the match on Saturday. I go to nearly all the matches and get tickets from Cardiff Rugby Club. It's exciting for me to see the cup, it really is."

Ryan added: "It's really good seeing it. None of my friends have seen it so I'm going to be able to tell them all about this."

Evenlode Primary headteacher Alun Jenkins, who regularly commentates on rugby games for radio in Welsh, said: "We're delighted that it's here at Evenlode."

Class teacher Owen Thomas, who helps with rugby at the school, was allowed a closer look at the cup, along with the following boys who have all represented the county in rugby: Matthew Soltys, 11; Daniel Locke, 11; Jordan Thompson, 10; Jack David, 10; Craig Huish, 11; Nick Morgan, 11; and Louis Jones, 11.

The cup was given to Cardiff Rugby Club specifically for taking around schools in Cardiff and the Vale though the club's Capital Rugby programme.

The scheme provides rugby training for various schools throughout the area and recently visited Albert Road School.

Mr Williams also visited Fairfield and Victoria Primary Schools to show them the cup.

He said: "It's marvellous. They will see this trophy on Saturday when it's presented at the end of the game and they will be able to say that they've seen it today."
