SOMETIME towards the end of 2001 (I think about September or October) you published a letter from Mrs Y Butler from Baglan, Port Talbot.
Mrs Butler was looking for information about the "Pickfords of Penarth". I have replied separately to Mrs Butler but felt that you and maybe other readers or family members may be interested in some of the family history.
My late father was Jack Pickford, son of Philip Pickford, both of whom lived in Cardiff. Philip Pickford's father was also called Philip Pickford and his brother was Joseph Pickford who was the father of John, Joseph and Emily Pickford, referred to by Mrs Butler. Thus making John, Joseph and Emily cousins of my grandfather Philip Pickford (Jnr).
Joseph (Snr) and Philip (Snr) Pickford were both born in Ilchester, Somerset. Joseph moved to Penarth sometime between 1861 and 1868. Philip moved to Cardiff around 1892/93. The parents of Joseph (Snr) and Philip (Snr) were John Manners Pickford and Martha (formerly Masters). I believe John and Martha had five sons and three daughters. Apart from my great grandfather, who was a Carpenter, John and his sons were all shown on the Census records as either Masons or Builders.
My great grandfather Philip's birth certificate shows his and his parents' name as Pickfatt.
In 1851 the family were living at The Mead, Ilchester, Somerset and are on the 1851 census as Pickfatt. However there are no references to any Pickfatts in the 1881 Census and all members of the family I have traced are shown as Pickford.
