We're off on tour!

BUDDING rugby stars from Penarth are desperately trying to raise cash to fund a tour of Singapore and Australia this summer.

A party of 33 boys aged 15-18 from St Cyres and Stanwell Schools will travel during July and August, but first they have to raise £1,500 each.

They are members of St Cyres School's 1st and 2nd XV teams and have been raising money already through events including a gentlemen's dinner and a sponsored leg wax (for boys). They are also having a golf day at Glamorganshire Golf Club on April 12.

If all goes to plan, the boys will jet out from Heathrow on July 15 for an adventure which will see them playing five different teams.

Ron Brookman, coach and PE teacher, said: "We traditionally host schools from different parts of the world every year. It's only us and Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf that normally host.

"We had a tour here last year from Waverley College and the boys thought it was time for us to go on tour again. The choice was South Africa or Australia, but as Waverley College were from Australia we chose to go there.

"We have a very good side, very committed and very enthusiastic. A number of the boys represent the county including Tim Naylor, David Gorwill, John Hinton, David Roberts and Leon Andrews."

They will be accompanied by PE teachers Mr Brookman and Matthew Bolton and Welsh teacher Hugh Reynolds.

Now they are doing their best to raise the money, as well as preparing a brochure for the tour. They hope local businesses will sponsor the brochure and put in adverts. Interested firms should contact Mr Brookman at St Cyres on 2070 8708.
