High fees

ON Easter Sunday, I drove to the Penarth side of the Barrage and was disconcerted to discover I had no change, but also that parking would cost £1 for one hour, £2 for two hours and £3 for three hours (the maximum permitted).

I proceeded to the Cardiff end of the Barrage, where I parked reasonably close to St David's Hotel. Here, parking was only 30p for one hour, 60p for two hours and 90p for three hours.

I settled for two hours and a young man in the bar gave me change. I didn't go back for liquid refreshment. One might have bumped into sundry AMs and sure enough, I did see one of two, notably Rhodri Morgan.

The scale of tariffs in Penarth is on the steep side, but this may simply be a desire to recover some of the heavy costs of building the barrage.
