THE VALE of Glamorgan Council's official dog pound has hit back after being criticised by a Penarth woman.
Croft Kennels, near Coity, was recently awarded the authority's dog kennelling contract for the third successive year.
But after the news was published in the Penarth Times, A Dog's Life charity spokesman Mo Davie said according to the article, the Croft prided itself on its abilities to rehome, but only managed 243 in the last two years while 447 were sent to other charities.
Mrs Davie said: "The National Canine Defence League are full to capacity and unable to rehome in sufficient numbers, so pass dogs onto the Croft who are also unable to rehome successfully and so the poor animals are being passed all over the country.
"But where is their final destination and what happens to them? Are all the dogs being euthanised outside their area of control?"
Philip Morgan, owner of Croft Kennels, said dogs only went to new homes and to one charity NCDL.
He said: "My wife Adrienne and I set up the business as we are animal lovers and were appalled at the amount of dogs being destroyed.
"The kennels are licensed by Bridgend County Borough Council, the RSPCA can come in here any time they want, we're also licensed for quarantining by Defra so we get them inspecting. We do not hide anything."
He added: "We get paid for seven days to keep the dogs here, then we can destroy them. But we don't, we keep them here at a cost covered by us. We've had some dogs here for nine months.
"This isn't a money-making thing. We could get paid to destroy dogs, but we don't do it. Would it be in my interest to take dogs elsewhere to be put to sleep if I could get paid to do it here?"
