Group repair schemes begin

A MULTI-MILLION pound initiative to revamp central Penarth has started.

The Vale of Glamorgan Council has officially launched the Penarth Renewal Area scheme which covers nearly 600 properties mainly bounded by Arcot Street, Plassey Street, Albert Road and Paget Road.

Much of the work will be undertaken through group repair schemes comprising around 20 houses and/or flats per scheme, working around the area.

Each grant-aided scheme covers comprehensive work to the exterior and surrounds of properties.

Cllr Jeffrey James said: "This local area-based initiative is an ambitious, long-term approach to dramatically improve the condition of housing, the local environment and commerce in the neighbourhood and follows the undoubted success of the first renewal area in Cadoxton in Barry."

A vital part of the initiative will be an advice centre as a focal point for the local community and use by partner agencies.

A property in Glebe Street has been secured by the council, and, following renovation works, the office is expected to be open to the public later this year.

Cllr James added: "I understand the residents are very enthusiastic and supportive of the proposals. Renewal area initiatives bring about a fundamental change for better and new confidence.

"Key objectives of a successful renewal area cover the physical improvement of the housing stock and infrastructure, environmental projects, economic development, private investment and a sense of community and civic pride.

"The non physical improvements are every bit as essential as the physical if the area is to flourish and have a sustainable community in the long term.

"It is the aim of the council, through the work of the renewal area initiative, to provide community leadership in partnership with other agencies and the local community."

The first of the group repair schemes is under way in part of Glebe Street and includes work to houses and flats.
