IRATE Penarth anglers have continued to vent their fury over local people who complain about them fishing on the pier.

The members of Penarth Sea Angling Club say they are fed up with the row and are as considerate as possible.

It follows a recent letter in which an anonymous reader complained about rods and bait on the pier and promenade.

This week the anglers hit back, saying they would go somewhere else if there was anywhere suitable.

Nathan Gill, 15, of Barry said: "I think it's pathetic what they're saying. It's important for people my age and younger. Kids aged six or seven come here. It gives them something to do.

"If people mess around or break the rules, they are kicked out."

Paul Naylor, of Penarth, said: "We look after the kids who come here - there are about 12-15 youngsters. Most of them wouldn't be allowed to fish on the beach for safety reasons."

Mike Keenan, of Cardiff, said: "Fishing from the beach is dangerous. The cliffs elsewhere are forever crumbling - we're safe here. There's been fishing on this pier for 80 years and there's not been one accident in that time."

Richie Phillips, of Barry, said: "I am disabled and can't walk far, so this is the ideal place for me."

Damian Kyriaco, of Cardiff, said: "You couldn't meet a nicer group of people.

"I've been fishing for a month and they've really helped me. They told me not to put bait on the benches and to be considerate."

Fishing is allowed on the promenade all year and on the pier all year apart from June, July and August.
