Fantastic support for Tour Golf day

FUND RAISING for St Cyres 1st XV rugby tour to Australia received a major boost last week.

On Friday, Glamorganshire Golf Club hosted a tournament of 22 teams of golfers from local sports clubs, friends and businesses all providing the most generous support to the tour funds.

With the course reserved for the afternoon, the competition attracted a broad range of talent and it was most fitting that the winning score of eight under par was carded by the St Cyres Old Boys' team.

The individual prizes for longest drive on the 15th, and nearest the pin on the 18th, were both won by guests of sponsoring firms.

The post tournament dinner provided marvellous entertainment after the strenuous activities of the day.

The golfers enjoyed a fine meal, beer and wine served up by the club steward and none more so than the 'Willie Wanderers' team celebrating their wooden spoon award into the early hours of the morning.

A proliferation of raffle prizes, all kindly donated, generated a substantial contribution to the takings and meant that few participants went away empty handed.

Over £100 was pledged by bidders during the auction most effectively executed by the flamboyant Andrew Ferrier. An impressive display of sporting artefacts came under the hammer, including cup final rugby jerseys given by local Welsh international Ian Eidman.

A sweatshirt autographed by ten world ranking tennis players donated and authenticated by Queens Club in London attracted the highest bidding.

The event exceeded all expectations of the fund raising committee and a huge thank you is proffered to all participants, sponsors, donors and helpers involved in the day.

It proved most enjoyable and there have already been calls for a repeat of the event to support others promoting junior sport in Penarth.

On this occasion the sponsors are assured that the young men from Penarth will now travel down-under representing their school and the town superbly equipped and dressed smartly as a result of their generosity.
