A YOUNG Penarth adventurer has completed two very tough months in the jungles of Sarawak, Borneo.
James Cuddy, 18, was part of a dynamic team that successfully completed an ambitious project with UK-based conservation charity Trekforce Expeditions.
James, a former pupil of Stanwell School, flew out to Borneo in late January with 35 other Trekforce volunteers.
After a week of necessary acclimatisation and jungle training, the group was split into two separate project teams.
James, known as 'Goose' on the expedition, said: "The teams worked on the upgrade of important trails that link Kelabit villages in the Bario region, complete with visitor centres, wardens' posts and suspension bridges.
"The projects were being carried out in support of the National Parks and Wildlife Division of Sarawak, which aims to encourage responsible eco-tourism that can provide a modest but sustainable source of income for the villagers themselves."
The volunteers gained rich insight into a very diverse environment and fascinating culture.
He added: "We slept in hammocks strung between the trees, with canvas sheets above us and mosquito nets to keep out the insects. The team soon got used to the simple living arrangements and we began to feel quite at home in the jungle."
Expedition leader Neil Amos said: "He was very energetic and made a valuable contribution to all aspects of the project."
To raise money for the trip, James worked locally and asked several organisations to support him.
He said: "I would like to thank the Atlantic Foundation for their generous donation towards the cost of my expedition. The jungle was an amazing place which was also quite tough at times, but I really had the most memorable two months of my life."
James starts a four-year design degree at Goldsmiths University in London in the autumn. For more information, visit www.trekforce.org.uk or phone 020 7828 2275.
