Safety on roads to be highlighted

DINAS Powys Road Safety Action Group is holding a meeting to discuss possible ways of making the village a better place.

Jean Roderick, of the action group, has invited Vale of Glamorgan councillor Chris Franks to a meeting on Tuesday, May 7, to find out what avenues can be explored.

Cllr Franks attends the meetings regularly to deliberate on any traffic problems that arise.

She said: "For a long time, money for traffic calming measures has been allocated to roads with bad accident ratings. The village centre is a notorious place to try and cross, especially at peak times of the day. But because residents have been so careful over the years, we have never secured funds to do anything about it."

It seems as though the criteria may have now changed. Roads are judged on their level of risk, and the potential of increased speed is considered alongside the risk assessment.

With this in mind, Jean, of Greenbanks Avenue, now hopes Dinas Powys will get the help it needs.

She said: "There are two areas in Dinas which have to be looked at. One is the centre and the other is outside St Andrew's School."

Cllr Chris Franks said: "There are two possible ways of finding funding to help Dinas, and these will be talked about more fully in the meeting. There is the Safe Routes to Schools grant for St Andrew's, and a Transport Grant for the centre."

Jean added: "What we would like to see is stronger calming measures, especially along Bridgeman Road. This meeting is really to look at the possibilities in the hope of securing finds for next year."

If you would like to attend the meeting, it is taking place in the committee room of the Parish Hall at 7.15pm on Tuesday, May 7.
