The road to Wimbledon

TWENTY-FOUR aspiring young tennis players at Windsor LTC took part in a 'The Road To Wimbledon' tournament on Saturday and Sunday April 26 and 27.

This was a Closed Club Singles Tournament for Boys and Girls aged 14 and under.

The winners will then go on to play County Finals, and if victorious at county, will have the opportunity to play in the National finals on the courts of the All England Tennis Club.

A knockout tournament organised by Rob Cunningham, club coach was played with great spirit in very blustery conditions, with a round robin format for the losers - this meant lots of tennis and some nail biting moments for the spectators.

The boys competition was very fiercely contested through all the rounds, with the finalists Peter Richmond and Tom Sidford unfortunately having to come off court on Sunday afternoon at one set all, two games all, due to appaling weather conditions.

This final will be resumed during the week.

Spectators enjoyed some lovely tennis in the final of the Girls competition which was played on Sunday, with Bethan Pilcher beating Alys Randall 6-2, 6-4. Congratulations to Bethan who now goes on to the County Final.

Bethan has also recently represented Cardiff in the Nantes/Cardiff Youth Sports Festival, 2002.

She and one other girl played tennis for Cardiff, with Bethan winning two out of three singles matches and her doubles match - thus winning the tennis tournament for Cardiff.

She is an active and promising junior member at Windsor who really enjoys her tennis, and the club extend their congratulations.
