THE 14TH ST JOSEPH'S Rugby and Netball Tournament took place on Saturday in warm and dry conditions.
In all 26 netball matches and seven rugby games took place with 17 teams representing nine local schools. It was good to welcome back both Evenlode and Victoria after a gap of several years, and Evenlode in Pool A dominated the netball competition as they won all five games scoring 35 goals in the process.
There were fine performances from the second strings of Albert and St Joseph's, and a high level of skill demonstrated by all the youngsters.
In Pool B St Joseph's first match was a repeat of last year's final, but this time they managed to turn the tables on Sully by winning 6-2. Those were the only goals that this strong squad, which is unbeaten in all competitions this year, was to concede in winning the group with something to spare.
The final was fiercely competitive, with vociferous support for both teams, and a first half, which was nip and tuck. St Joseph's stuck at it to record an 8-4 victory in a high quality final which was a credit to all of the youngsters.
In the rugby competition, it seemed as if Tim, the younger brother of last year's player of the tournament, Maurice Dunne, was making an early bid for the same honour, in scoring three tries and three conversions in a surprisingly easy victory over Victoria. Joel Gosling also scored two tries.
