Taking the reins

PENARTH has a new mayor - Stanwell ward representative Cllr David Clapham.

The Professor of Housing at Cardiff University took up the post at a ceremony at Penarth Town Council last Thursday.

Cllr Clapham, Labour, took over the reins from Cllr Carole Clifford who represented the council on 172 occasions from May 2001 until May 2002.

Cllr Clapham said: "I'm really looking forward to it. Everyone tells me the real joy of it is meeting so many people in the town and getting involved in local organisations and helping the community."

He added: "I'd like to pay tribute to Cllr Clifford. She did a fantastic job." Cllr Clapham chose Care and Repair in the Vale as his chosen charity for 2002-2003.

He said: "As a Professor of Housing I know the value of what they can do." The charity's chairman Graeme Thelwell of Dow Corning and manager Jan Twedily attended the ceremony.

Jan Twedily said: "Care and Repair in the Vale has a reputation for helping older and disabled people and hopes to have some involvement with Penarth Renewal Area."

The charity recently launched a handyperson service and is planning to base their handyperson in Penarth for one day a week with a project officer based in the renewal area, depending on funding.

Stepping down from her role, Cllr Clifford said: "It has been a memorable year.

"Working with my two nominated charities the Penarth and District Stroke Support Group and Home Access Trust is rewarding and fun and I would like to thank all those who work so tirelessly for them."
