DVD Review

ENTER the world of a young wizard in the magical film 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone'.

Starring talented youngster Daniel Radcliffe as the eleven-year-old wizard, the film is based on the first of J K Rowling's classic series of novels.

It all begins when young Harry celebrates his eleventh birthday and receives a letter in the post from Hogwarts School, an establishment for teaching magic.

Immediately, his Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia try to snatch the letter before Harry reads it - they know about a history of magic in the family which they are very scared of, and don't want Harry to know about it. But when Hogwarts keeper Hagrid appears, they have no choice but to let Harry go.

And so starts this film of surprises, special effects, horror and comedy. With Rupert Grint as Ron and Emma Watson as Hermione, the film is carried along by a young cast, who perform brilliantly.

J K Rowling's imaginative plot is implemented well and the soundtrack composed by John Williams is atmospheric.

Directed by Chris Columbus, this is a great film which just leaves you wanting to see more. Roll on 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets'.
