Serving up a Jubilee treat

MEMBERS OF Penarth Lawn Tennis Club in Rectory Road have a lot to look forward to this month.

Jubilee celebrations, tournaments and the fourth annual tennisathon to name but a few. On Saturday, June 1 the club will be hosting a Jubilee tennis party for girls aged 13 and under. You do not have to be a member of the club to take part as it is open to all girls with little or no previous tennis experience. The accent is on fun and their will be a chance to win prizes and make friends.

Tea will be served as usual on Sunday afternoon in the clubhouse at 4pm and the conversation at the regular Friday family social evening will no doubt revolve around the Jubilee celebrations planned for Monday, June 3. There will be tennis games and competitions for all ages and abilities, face painting, egg and spoon and sack races, a bouncy castle, fancy dress competition and lots more plus a special tea fit for a queen.

The juniors at the club are really excited and have got into the swing of things already sporting their crowns and tiaras and draping themselves with flags and bunting in readiness for the big day. The fun starts at 2pm so lets hope the sun shines to make this a day to remember.

Fine weather would also be a bonus on June 21 and 22 when the club holds its fourth annual Tennisathon in aid of Sport Relief.

The LTA acknowledges Penarth Lawn Tennis Club as an authority in staging this 24 hour charity tennis marathon and advises other clubs to contact them for help and ideas. Once again the members and celebrity guests will be out in force. Sport Relief is an exciting new fundraising campaign from Comic Relief and BBC Sport that aims to unite the world of sport to raise money for vulnerable children and young people here at home and across the world.

Every penny raised by the club will go to projects supported by Comic Relief - 50 per cent of the money raised will stay in this country and the other 50 per cent will go to the most vulnerable children in some of the poorest countries in the world.

This is an event that the club is justifiably proud of and thoroughly deserves the support of the community. It takes a lot of effort and determination to keep the marathon going especially in the early hours and when the heavens decide to open. Sponsorship forms are available from the clubhouse and if you would like to be involved please contact Chrissie Pegg on 2070 6897.
