Parties did the nation so proud

PENARTH is the pride of Britain this week, after throwing a whole host of fantastic parties to celebrate the Queen's Golden Jubilee.

From tots and toddlers to OAPs, the glittery parties and celebrations went off with a bang from Saturday until Tuesday, with patriotic bunting and shining crowns a regular sight.

The youngsters at Cogan Nursery School were overjoyed when they were visited by the Queen - or rather, their school secretary Jean Shafto, who shared an uncanny likeness. She gave out special medallions to all the children, engraved with 'We're All Friends At Cogan Nursery School - Golden Jubilee 2002'.

Head teacher Chris Hodge said at Friday's Jubilee party: "We've had an absolutely fantastic day. The children have all dressed up as kings and queens and look brilliant.

"The staff and parents have all made a great effort too, dressing up, making lots of delicious food and putting up lots of bunting."

The youngsters at First Steps Nursery in Cogan also had a wonderful time dressing up as royalty.

Proprietor Tracy Davies said: "We've had lots of fun here today. The parents brought in food for the children, who have all dressed up as kings and queens. The staff have done a sponsored fancy dress to raise money for the Noah's Ark Appeal and so far we've raised about £150."

There were also plenty of street parties at Charlotte Street, Shakespeare Avenue, Byrd Crescent and St Ambrose and St Baruc Closes in Dinas Powys.

The Royal British Legion in Penarth took part in a Church parade from Station Approach to All Saints Church, while both Penarth and Dinas Powys Lawn Tennis clubs held special open days.

One of the most special events for some was when the beacon on the cliff top was lit by Penarth Town Council on Monday night, to tie in with hundreds being lit simultaneously across the UK.
