EXTRACTS from the Penarth Times of June 3, 1977:

Crowds of visitors to Penarth Seafront watched firemen battle with a blaze which badly damaged the Esplanade Hotel last Sunday afternoon.

Members of Penarth Town Council are split over a suggestion that they should run a lottery to raise funds for the provision of local amenities.

Penarth Town Council is to award a £100 prize for the best neighbourhood Jubilee celebration event in the town over the coming holiday period.

An 18-year-old Cogan girl, Miss Julie Parkman, who says she was "pushed into" entering the Miss Cogan Coronation Club contest, not only won it but has gone on to be chosen as Cardiff's Queen of Clubs.

A group of young people from the Bar 2000 Club at Albert Road Methodist Church, Penarth, went on the MAYC London weekend, in cheerful mood. They were Teresa Margate, Angela Ryan, Helen Thomas, Philip Coles, Simon Stokes and Alison Ryan.

Dinas Powis newsagent, Mr Michael Litton, gave chase to a burglar when he heard the sound of breaking glass at one of the family shops in the early hours of the morning.

EXTRACTS from the Penarth Times of June 5, 1992:

A storm of protest has erupted over a proposal to demolish a large Victorian property at 17 Victoria Square, Penarth, and to provide six two bedroom flats on the site.

Following last weekend's annual Games Exchange with Penarth's twin town of St Pol de Leon, Town Mayor Cllr Nigel Gibbs presented trophies at the Kymin.

Victorious French Pentaque team captain Francois Quemener accepted the shield, watched by successful archery captain Hugh Bumford.

Penarth MP Alun Michael has launched an urgent plea to the Director of Cadw for the frontage of houses in Victoria Square, Penarth to be listed.

Penarth Music and Variety Company celebrated their 25th anniversary with a dinner and dance at South Glamorgan County Hall.

The children of Dinas Powys Infants School said goodbye to Mrs Beryl Gate, who recently left the school after 19 years as a dinner supervisor.

Eluned Williams, who managed a National Children's Home Project at Dinas Powys, visited Buckingham Palace last week to collect her MBE which she gained for her work there.
