Fishy trouble

I RECENTLY visited your refined and genteel resort.

May I say how much cleaner the pier has become since daytime angling has been banned? The public no longer has to endure live bait being cut-up on the seats.

There is also the crucial issue of health and safety. My nephew was once obliged to attend the accident and emergency department at the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport.

He had lacerations to the lip because he was sufficiently unfortunate to walk behind a fisherman who was casting off.

I observe that the piermaster now controls evening fishing permits. It is to be hoped that during summer evenings such permits are not issued at all before 8pm.

My personal view, as a non-resident, is that even then such evening permits should be both severely restricted and financially expensive.

I am sure, and certain, that you readers, always an excellent barometer of local opinion, will have views on this matter.
