Dinas LTC Jubilee Event

MONDAY, June 3 proved to be a popular date across the UK with the Queen celebrating her Golden Jubilee and Dinas Powys Lawn Tennis Club was no exception.

Ticket sales exceeded all expectations and once 350 tickets had been sold the event was declared a sell-out.

Starting with the club's senior members partnering the juniors in a doubles tournament, two hours later, 48 pairs had become one. Congratulations go to winners Owain Nedin and Diana Pugh with Michael Hooper and Julie Collins a close second.

Whilst the tournament was in progress a children's entertainer amused the younger members. Finally the clouds cleared and a blue sky prevailed and the stage was set for the traditional sports day style races.

Across three tennis courts the games began. Over 100 children of all ages took part, the arena surrounded by parents, grandparents etc.

The crowd wasn't disappointed from the tiny tots potato on a tennis racket race, a space hopper relay, the Big Mac challenge, big welly race, three legged races and hurdles to follow, the races culminated with grandparents carrying grandchildren piggy-back style followed by everyone's favourite - the tug of war.

After the children had had their turn the men got down to business and over the best of three pulls, 80 fully grown children battled it out!

Club President Dr Alun Bater presented all the children with a gold medallion and junior chairperson Jan Cunningham made a surprise presentation to Mollie McClean (who was celebrating her sixth birthday) with a cake and teddy bear.

A disco then rounded off the day.
