Pony needs his pals again

A DINAS Powys woman is appealing to the community to help a close friend of her late sister.

Sue Lewis, of Longmeadow Drive, said: "I'm sure many people will remember my sister, Helen King. She ran Dinas Powys Animal Aid for many years. When she died, the centre shut, and we had to find homes for the five horses, five goats, 20 chickens and 30 pigeons Helen cared for. Among the menagerie was Fury, and he needs help again."

The small Shetland pony was one of Helen's favourite residents at the centre. Standing only 32 inches high, Fury found a home with Margaret Peters at Llandovery.

Sue added: "Fury is a champion. When he was with Helen, he used to advertise for Welsh Brewers. They made him a tiny dray with their logo on it, and sponsored him. Since being with Margaret, her whole family has fallen in love with him. He has a small cart and gives rides to her grandchildren. He's a small chap with a big personality and an even bigger heart.

"But not long ago, he fell ill with a disease affecting his legs and causing lameness. He travelled to Wiltshire for a last-ditch attempt to save his life. It worked. Though he'll never be 100 percent strong, he has had special shoes fitted and a strict diet. But the whole thing cost £1,500."

Sue felt she had to do something to help out. The insurance company would not pay and Margaret was stuck with the entire bill. Sue said: "On June 7, we held a dog show. Everyone's efforts raised £104 towards our fund."
