EXTRACTS from the Penarth Times of June 17, 1977:

Opposition is still mounting to the OAP concessionary fares tokens scheme which was introduced at the beginning of April.

Mrs Iris Jeffries needed quite a bit of help to carry off her 'shopping' from the Co-op. For she had £100 worth - the amount she managed to scoop up as a winner of a bingo competition for a five minute 'grocery grab'.

At the Urdd Eisteddfod held at Barry last week, Keith Davies, a pupil of Stanwell Comprehensive School, won the piano solo for the 15-19 age group.

A record was nudged and a rod smashed when Penarth Labour Club fished their Jubilee competition at Nash Point aboard the charter boat Michelle. The Welsh record of 17lb 4ozs for a Bull Huss was nudged when Stewart Kerr boated one of 17lbs.

The first of Penarth Yacht Club's single handed races was won by Roy Barker in 'Bean'.

One of the lucky winners of a national Sunday Newspaper's award for a Jubilee bouquet was Mrs Anne Humphries, aged 91, of Salop Street, Penarth.

Mrs Iris Hopkins former Head Teacher of Dinas Powys Infants School, now retired, was installed as the new president of the Barry & District branch of Soroptimist International, by outgoing president Mrs Maywin Thomas.

Stanwell Comprehensive School's Crime Prevention Panel goes from strength to strength. Now numbering well over 25 pupils, the panel meets every Friday during the lunch break.

Chairman of Dinas Powys Community Council, Cllr Eddie Roberts represented the village at the Penarth Town Mayor's Parade and Civic Service at St Augustine's Church last Sunday.

Vale Mayor Cllr Des Leddington has called on Post Office Counters to waive the 75p fee charged to people who pay their electricity bill at sub post offices which are not full agencies.

Members of Penarth Lifeboat crew and honorary secretary Capt Graham Sommerfield visited the Albion public house to accept a cheque for £1,000 which was raised as a result of a Sunday night quiz. Jan Wadey presented the cheque.
