EXTRACTS from the Penarth Times of June 24 1977:

The new president of the Inner Wheel Club of Penarth, Mrs Gwen Yates was installed by retiring president Mrs Joan Miller at the annual general meeting.

Police were called in following the mysterious disappearance of a kitten from the RSPCA cats home in Andrew Road, Penarth, last Sunday.

A proposal by Vale of Glamorgan Council to create a new domestic refuse tip at the disused Cosmeston Farm Quarry site at Lavernock has been approved by the Vale Planning Committee.

At the recently held Urdd National Eisteddfod in Barry, Albert Junior School won two major awards in the art competition. In the 10-12 age group the collage 'Around my Home' depicting the neighbourhood of the school, won first prize.

A member of an old Cogan family has been awarded the Queen's Silver Jubilee Medal. He is Professional and Technical Officer George Marsh, who is serving with the RAF at Attenbury, Worcester.

The local organiser of the Women's Royal Voluntary Service, Miss Winfred Faller, has been honoured by receiving the Queen's Silver Jubilee Medal.

The construction of a Severn Barrage would have a devastating effect on the area of Penarth, Dinas Powys and Sully.

Penarth MP Alun Michael is desperately disappointed at the 'unbending and unimaginative approach' of Wales Gas after meeting the company in a bid to save the town's gas showroom.

Penarth Sea Cadets celebrated their 50th anniversary with a concert at the Paget Rooms last Friday.

After finishing their year's study at St Cyres School three sisters from Norway, Anne Kari, Kjersti and Mari Kvernebo presented Headmaster Mr Brian Rowlands with a framed print by Edvard Munch entitled The Sun.

Members of Stanwell School's RSPCA Club, James Rawlings, Roneeka Bhagotra, Victoria Perry, Annalise Roberts and Faye Parker gathered together the cat and dog food the group have collected before taking it down to the Cardiff Animal Shelter in Penarth.

Cadet Cpl Mark Soderland and Flt Sgt Daniel Griffith, of 1148 (Penarth) Squadron Air Cadets are the latest cadets to obtain their wings having undergone training at 634 Gliding School based at RAF St Athan.
