PM in a spin

ACCORDING to the 2002 edition of Who's Who, which I consulted in Penarth library a day or two ago, the entry for Black Rod (an entry which can be found under 'W' for Wilcocks, not 'B' or 'R' by the way) shows one of his interests as tennis.

Coincidentally, one of the most recent media events concerning our Prime Minister, Tony Blair, shows him playing tennis. I did not even look up Blair in Who's Who, since I feel that I know quite enough about him already.

However, in the event of the current Prime Minister ever revising his entry, one might suggest that he include among his interests 'spin' and 'being at the centre of media attention at all times.' Not just as his important role as Prime Minister, that is, but on the football field, with pop stars and last, but by no means least, at all Royal events which he can muscle into and obtain a prominent role at.

Black Rod's own described lifestyle might appear more authentic and genuine. The House of Lords, and its officials, has not been known for spin-doctoring nor an excessive wish for media attention, rather than getting on with their modest job, in spite of the occasional hostility of the House of Commons, which has already turned their traditional composition upside down, and would like the Upper House to be merely a talking shop of yes-men and women nominated by, you've guessed, Tony and his mates.
