Murch bounce back after bad start to week

THE WEEK started badly for the men bowlers of the Murch when all four rinks tasted defeat in the Munro Cup match on the lush green of the Penarth Rectory Road club.

The 19 shot defeat could have been worse for after the first five ends the difference between the sides was an amazing 39 shots.

However, the Murch players rallied somewhat to give the home side a real contest. Colin Reynolds's rink lost by a mere one shot on the last end, whilst the scratch rink skipped by Harry Guppy took the lead after trailing 0-11, but eventually succumbed by 5 shots.

One peculiarity was that all four home rinks registered a total of 20 shots for.

There was no improvement in the Alliance game against Whitchurch Hospital, where only the rink skipped by stalwart Colin Garland gained success.

Captain Pat Hayes (minus 20 shots) and veteran Arthur Perry (minus 1 shot) together with Club President Terry Mayor (minus 3 shots) were the losing skips.

Fortunes took a turn for the better in the Saturday Cardiff and District League games, where both club and A sides gained their second successive victories both by 12-2 margins.

The Club side entertained St Joseph's A and after a close struggle pulled away over the last five ends, to record a 25 shot victory. Star rink was the Tony Rice quartet with a 25-11 success.

Roger Mauchline's four scored a seven on two of the ends, a feat proudly proclaimed by Roger in the clubhouse following the game.

The A side travelled the short distance to Barry to do battle with the Central A side in a Division 6 game. Veteran Ron Giles, Colin Garland and Terry Mayor all skipped their rinks to victory, and to an overall 19 shot win.

Like their male counterparts the ladies from the Murch started their week's programme with a heavy defeat, travelling to Rhoose and finding the artificial surface not to their liking, going down by 28 shots.

Amends were made with an away win at Trelai in the Glamorgan Evening League game with skip Belinda Price's 18-3 success more than compensating for the 1 shot defeat suffered by the rink skipped by Val Richards.
