Bike route near

EVENLODE Primary pupils are a step closer to getting their new cycle route.

The Vale of Glamorgan Council's Planning Committee met this week to discuss plans for a cycle path which could cover Westbourne Road, Clinton Road and Robinswood Crescent. At the meeting on June 26, members decided to carry out a site visit in the area with a view to adopting Option Two, one of four proposals for the site.

Option Two looks at removing a proposal to close the unnamed lane leading to Archer Terrace.

It also adds a toucan crossing point in Westbourne Road, approximately 110 metres south of its junction with Clinton Road and reduces the cycle route in Robinswood Crescent to just its eastern arm and to that of a shared facility with pedestrians.

The proposed toucan crossing is by a pedestrian route that links Sully Terrace with Robinswood Crescent.

A new segregated cycle route is proposed to extend northwards from the location along the western side of Westbourne Road to link with the cycle route proposed in Clinton Road. The option also proposes the construction of a segregated cycle route to prevent disturbance to two mature trees on Clinton Road.

This would be achieved by building out the footways at its junctions with Westbourne Road and Robinswood Crescent (eastern arm) and linking them by coloured surfacing at carriageway level and installing narrow splitter islands for part of the length affected by trees.

The members discussed residents' suggestions to put in a 20mph zone outside the school, instead of the cycle paths, but Rob Quick, director of Environmental and Economic Regeneration, said this would not achieve any significant uptake in the number of pupils cycling to school.

The proposals are set to be discussed at the next meeting of the Planning Committee on July 23.
