Parking plan for Esplanade

PENARTH Esplanade's one-way system is set to be made permanent.

The Vale of Glamorgan Council's Planning Committee recommended keeping the scheme at a meeting this week.

The next step will be taken at a meeting in September, when two new elements for the scheme will be discussed.

These will be that the chevron parking in front of the Italian Gardens is made kerbside parking, and that vision for drivers coming out of the Glyn Tower and Park Tower flats on Bridgeman Road is widened.

Cllr Maureen Kelly Owen, a committee member, said: "The idea for the parking came from a resident. Instead of having chevron parking in front of the Italian Gardens, there would be kerbside parking.

"I've been told about problems when there were art exhibitions in the gardens. People were very conscious of the cars reversing in and driving out and felt there wasn't enough amenity space.

"I'm hoping the idea will be integrated into the scheme. I think you could lose 14 car parking spaces, but the stretch up the hill is now being used quite heavily."

She added: "Another concern is at the flats on Bridgeman Road. It's making sure drivers coming out have enough vision either side and the double yellow lines there are policed. "I'm hoping if we can get these ideas through, the scheme finds favour with most people. There have been objections but the good outweighs the bad."

Mo Martin, of Lavernock Road, said: "I think it's a pity they don't have it all pedestrianised.

"At the moment, I think the chevron parking is facing the wrong way."
