WORRIED Penarthians are demanding the Vale of Glamorgan Council implements traffic-calming measures at 'rat run' Sully Road "before it is too late".
Locals say the road, near three schools, is extremely busy and that the one traffic control measure near Meadowside is not enough.
They are also worried that the new Cogan Hall Farm development of 400 houses could increase traffic, although the council has assured them the site will not have any direct access through to Sully Road.
Father-of-two Paul Carlton, who lives at Sully Road, said: "It's already like a race track. We can't let our six- and eight-year-olds out alone as it is. There are so many motorists speeding along I'm surprised there haven't been more accidents."
He added: "A development of 400 houses is a lot. I've had assurance from planners that there is no intention of making vehicular access available on to Sully Road, but I'd like confirmation."
Maurice Flynn, headteacher of St Joseph's RC Primary School, which is based in Sully Road, said: "My concern is what happens at school time. The area around Ysgol Pen-y-Garth gets congested, then because of a lack of parking at Ashgrove School, parents park on one side of Sully Road with their hazard lights on, making it a one-way stretch."
He added: "There's also a problem with speeding. Some people come along at 60mph. It's a rat run.
"I'm not worried so much at our school, as we've got a new large car park. My major concern is for the St Cyres children who walk across the road to the Ash Path. "If there's any increase in traffic, the danger for them will be higher. There's no crossing for them."
A council spokesman confirmed there would be no access to Sully Road from the housing development, and said there were no plans for traffic-calming on the road.
