PENARTH, 'the garden by the sea', but looking at the part closest to the sea - what a mess! The decking of the pier is in a disgracefully dangerous state. There is rotten wood, holes that could easily trip a child or elderly person, all marked with yellow paint of some antiquity.

It is good that the failing lamp posts along the front have been taken down, but little effort has been made to make the projecting bolts and wires safe.

The garden in front of the Esplanade shelter is a wilderness in contrast with the well kept Italian Gardens, and the rusty wire fence is not a favourable advertisement for visitors. When will the railings in the adjacent garden be extended?

As for the Pier Pavilion, a large sum of money has been spent on the pier restoration, but can it not be kept in good external decorative order until the refurbishment plan is carried out?

If we have a tourist attraction let's make it attractive!
