Good report pleases pupils and teachers

SULLY Primary Sch-ool is celebrating after being rated as 'very good' by inspectors.

The Burnham Aven-ue-based school, led by head teacher Jean Bispham, was described as providing an "enriching education" by inspector Kay Cornish.

Following their visit to the school, which had 373 pupils at the time with the equivalent of 15 full-time teachers, the inspectors described the school, which has a nursery, as "welcoming and caring" and a "fulcrum for the whole community".

They added: "Sully is a very good school which has made good improvement since the previous inspection in 1996.

"The school gives very good value for money."

The school was given one key issue for action. The inspection team felt it would be beneficial for the reception pupils to have larger classrooms so that they could have greater opportunities for independent choices in imaginative play and art.

Mrs Bispham said: "Whilst the staff and I appreciate that larger classrooms would be beneficial, it is not our experience that the reception classrooms in Sully School are smaller than others in the area."

Among the positive comments, the inspectors highlighted very good attendance - higher than the Wales average, and the fact that staff know their pupils well and give full consideration to their pupils' needs.

They also commented on the high standards of behaviour and attitudes to learning which contribute greatly to academic standards achieved and the overall quality of life in the school.

The inspectors also noted the pupils' spiritual, moral and social development as very good and said that their cultural development was good.

Mrs Bispham said: "I would like to take this opportunity of thanking pupils, staff, parents and governors, who contribute in so many ways to making Sully School such an excellent school."
