TALENTED Penarth children from several local schools performed to the best of their ability this week in a special concert.

Pupils from Albert Primary School, Ysgol Pen-y-Garth and St Andrew's Major Primary School united to take part in the Vale of Glamorgan Primary Schools Concert last Wednesday, July 3.

The concert was held to celebrate the year of cultural diversity.

All proceeds were donated to Crossroads and Arthritis Research Campaign, the two charities being supported by the Vale Council's chairman, Cllr Harold Rees, who attended the event.

While there he congratulated former Albert Primary School pupil Katherine Jones, 12, now of Stanwell School, who designed the logo used in the event.

The concert kicked off with Albert Primary's 'Samba Parade' followed by Ysgol Sant Curig's Welsh Folk Dance. This was led by Jessica Martin of Year 6 who performed a solo dance.

Romilly Junior School's choir sang and then Albert Primary's orchestra - created in September 2001 - stepped in to perform a piece to celebrate European Week.

Ysgol Pen-y-Garth was up next with harp music, followed by Ysgol Sant Curig and a creative dance. Albert Primary performed another Samba dance, before Ysgol Sant Curig took to the stage again for their disco dance.

The Ysgol Sant Curig girls were meant to have performed the dance in the Urdd Eisteddfod, but had to pull out due to a school inspection in the same week.

Next, Albert and Romilly Primarys performed on the steel pans, followed by St Andrew's Major Primary dancing in the style of 'Zorro' and performing a West African song. Albert Primary's brass band then played a few numbers.

Finally, Barry Island Primary, Holton Primary, Cadoxton Juniors, Llanfair Church in Wales Primary, Albert Primary and Gladstone Primary united as the 'Vale Symphonic Brass Ensemble', performing for the first time.
