Bands raise park hopes

DETERMINED youngsters in Dinas Powys eager to get their own skate park have formed an action group.

'The Dinas Skaters' have been meeting at their youth club, the Wesley Court Centre, and have come up with many of ideas to help get their wish. They have made their own film, lobbied councillor Chris Franks and have drawn up their own designs for a skate board park in the village.

Additionally, they organised a special bands night at the Wesley Court Centre to raise money.

The event raised £200 which will be used towards temporary ramps for the skate-boarders. Youth worker Chris Jones, from the club, said: "It was a very professional performance.

"Everyone will be looking out for the bands in the future, and eagerly waiting for the skate park in Dinas Powys."

The initiative comes just weeks after local youngsters (Penarth Times, July 11) vowed they were going to quash stereotypes which labelled them "irresponsible".

Jayne Tucker, senior information worker at Penarth Youth Project, said: "We want to make it possible for people to see how young people make a positive contribution, not a negative one."
