PENARTH youngsters are gearing up for a fun summertime challenge. The teenagers are getting set to clear an area of waste land situated in the grounds of Byrd Crescent Youth Club.
Youth clubs are making the move to help the community. They want to have an environmental area which would not only benefit themselves, but also the older people who use the centre.
The challenge will begin on August 5, and will continue for a two week period. Fifteen young people taking part will have to remove debris from the ground, and prepare it, as well as laying soil, securing benches and arrange plants and flowers in the area.
They will also be working towards a Bronze Youth Achievement Award, where they will have to complete four, fifteen-hour mini challenges.
The club has received funding totalling £3,386 from the Prince's Trust, which will cover the cost of materials, refuge disposal and tools. They have also trained youth worker Amy Stuart-Torrie in youth leadership skills for this event, as well as in first aid.
Amy explained that the area would be finished off with decking and a barbecue, complete with a seating area, and an art project.
On the final day of the challenge all the volunteers are going to celebrate their hard work by having a barbecue in their new garden.
The area will make a vital difference to the community, as a lot of people of all ages use the club for various activities.
The project has had the full involvement of all the youngsters at the club.
Amy said: "By providing an opportunity like this for the young people in the community, it would help to emphasis the point that the youth of today do take an interest in their environment, and are willing to make an effort and make a difference to their surroundings."
* The project is open for any volunteers over 11yrs. For further information, contact the Byrd Crescent Youth Club on 029 20405305.
